So getting a few items ahead for the future, I’ve sanded down the doors and measured up ready for the (eventual) window designs and installations. These will be the absolutely last bits to this refurbishment but psychologically it felt good to get a scale drawing put together!

I’ve sanded down the doors and put them aside for now. I felt I had to get the job I had been least looking forward to out of the way – wallpaper stripping!!

With everything prepped, my bowl of soapy water and stripper at the ready, I noticed something unusual on the downstairs ceiling on the 3rd room along. The ceiling had been patched up which suggests the stairs aperture somehow spanned two rooms? Aha! That wall was not always there, it was probably a staircase going up directly in front of the front door!

With a bit of chisel and hammering, the walls came away easily, having been glued in with a couple of tacks. I now only have 6 rooms but oh so much more space!!

Most of the wallpaper is off (there are some bits absolutely welded on) so next step is to sand the walls down and start designing the rooms. All of the rooms will be clad with thin MDF flooring, wall-panelling etc. so they don’t need to be perfect, just smooth and flat. Some progress made today I think (I’ve never liked stripping wallpaper) – especially with that extra space!!
